A state scholar of no equal

According to the legend, Chinese chess was invented by Han Xin. Han Xin was a poor orphan child, although he studied and practiced martial arts very hard, he had nothing to live on. He was compelled to become a parasite to have food in others’ home, so he was often treated with indifference.

Han Xin couldn't bear that, so he came to the bank of the Huai River to fish, then traded fish for dinner. But he was still burdened with hunger.

On the bank of Huai River, there was an old lady who had been bleaching yarn for others, known as “Bleaching Lady”.

When she saw that poor boy, Han Xin, she gave him some of her own food every day, and never stopped. Han Xin was deeply moved.

Later, Han Xin made illustrious exploits for Han Dynasty, and Xiao He, the advisor of Liu Bang called him “a state scholar of no equal.”

After being granted title with Huaiyin Vassal, he never forgot the kindness of Bleaching Lady’s meal. He sent people to look for her, and finally donated her with mass of gold. This is the origin of “A treat of meal in need, shall be returned with a spring in deed.”
